Shiur with Schlomo Rottman for Passover, part 2

Passover is one of the most important festivals. For eight days in spring, the liberation of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery is celebrated. It commemorates the biblical exodus from Egypt. The Seder evening, the ban on leavened food (chametz) and the consumption of unleavened bread (matzah) are central to the festival.

 

The most important aspects of Passover:
  • Significance: Passover (Hebrew for „passing over“ or „sparing“) marks the beginning of the history of the people of Israel as a free people. It is a celebration of freedom, family and spring.
  • Seder evening: At the beginning of the festival, the ritualised meal, the Seder (order), takes place. The story of the Exodus is read from the Haggadah, sung and eaten.
  • The Seder plate: This contains symbolic food reminiscent of the suffering in slavery and the escape (e.g. bitter herbs, bones, Charosset (a paste made from apples, nuts and wine)).
  • Mazzot (Mazzen): The consumption of leavened grain products (chametz) is forbidden throughout the entire festival week. Only unleavened bread is eaten, as the Israelites did not have time to let the dough rise during their flight.
  • Preparation: Before the party, the house is thoroughly cleaned to remove any chametz.
In 2026, Passover begins on the evening of 1 April and ends on 9 April.

Schlomo Rottman, Advisor for Religion and Culture at the IKG for Tyrol and Vorarlberg, repeats and deepens the great significance of Passover for the people of Israel in the second part. We will then continue learning the melodies of the Seder evening. The more people who are interested, the better we can organise the Seder evening together!
