Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah is called the „head“ of the year, not merely the „beginning“ of the year. As already mentioned, the festivals are the recurrence of the original events on the days in question. Just as G-d resolved upon the creation of the world in the beginning, so He turns His attention to it on each Rosh Hashanah with renewed energy, more than ever before, and this shapes His relationship with the world for the entire coming year.

Just as a head contains life and is the nerve centre of the body, Rosh Hashanah contains the life and sustenance of the entire year. That is the significance of the judgement on Rosh Hashanah, and that is why this festival is so solemn. For it depends on our „turning“ to G-d what He decrees on Rosh Hashanah: how He deals with us and how He blesses us and gives us what we need.
