Introduction to the festival of Purim

Purim is a joyous festival celebrated on the 14th of Adar. It commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire. Haman, a high and influential official, wanted to have all Jews destroyed out of hurt vanity and hatred and ultimately became a victim of his own evil intentions. The beautiful Jewish woman Esther, who was raised by her uncle Mordechai and rose to become queen, plays the central role in the rescue.

Customs:

  • Megilla reading: The story is read out in the synagogue; noise is made at the mention of Haman.
  • Cladding: Children and adults dress up, which is often interpreted as a symbol of God's hidden work in history.
  • Gifts & donations: It is traditional to send gifts to friends (Mishloach Manot) and to help the poor (Matanot l'Evyonim).
  • Feast: An exuberant feast is celebrated, during which the generous consumption of alcohol is expressly permitted.

Rav. Jaron Engelmayer, Chief Rabbi of the IKG Vienna, explains the deeper meaning of the festival and looks in particular at the figure of Haman, who is traditionally one of Israel's enemies. Why is there always hatred towards the Jewish people and how does this affect Jewish identity?

We invite you to explore these questions and discuss them with Chief Rabbi Engelmayer.
